tuesday treasures

As this is my last Tuesday Treasures ,
as hostess anyway , I thought I'd
show you a couple of things that are
very , very important to me .
The poetry book is inscribed inside
by my parents for my 4th birthday .

My dictionary was given to me by my mum
for my 18th birthday .

The most important thing I was given was
a love of reading .
I am a huge reader and although I rarely
read much of great literary value
I don't really care as long as I get to read .

I read to my children a lot and they have
seen me with my head in a book forever
and thank goodness it has rubbed off on them
and they too have become great readers .
Although funnily enough I can't seem
to get them very interested in Henry Lawson
my favourite bush poet/storyteller .

Surprise !
Tuesday Treasures is not finished !
has generously offered to take over for me
as of next Tuesday , thanks so much Melody .

We'd love to see your link to your treasures
here this week and next week at Melodys .

when I started high school that is the same dictionary we had to purchase. I still have mine on the shelf and it reminds me of starting high school. I still like to use a dictionary to look up words. My kids think it is too time consuming they prefer to google! There is something lovely about seeing words on a page and turning a page.
I agree that reading and a passion for books is a treasure.

You are so right in saying that the love a reading is a treasures. There is nothing better than holding a real book in your hands and getting lost in another world.
Thanks so much for hosting Tuesday Treasures over the last weeks. I've really enjoyed being a part of it. I'm glad that Melody will be continuing on the theme and I will continue to play.

Books are wonderful! Not only do they enlarge the horizons of the reader, but they increase the imagination. To live in a world without books is unthinkable.
I see The Owl and The Pussy cat on the poetry book ... I first read [or had read to me] that poem when quite small and had grave difficulty with the beautiful pea green boat ... I imagined it to be a pea pod!

Hi Clare, we couldn't live without our books, old ones and new ones alike, the house is over-run with them and we dream of a home with it's own library room *grin*. I also have my school dictionary, it's over 30 years old and much better than the ones my children are using now *smile*. Thanks for Tuesday Treasures, it's been a pleasure. toni xxx

Books are delicious. I love the smell of old musty books. Weird isn't it.
I haven't been joining in with Tuesday treasures for a few weeks, life got in the way but as this is your last week as hostess I'm back to join in. Thanks so much for doing this Clare. It's so much fun.

The best Treasure of all - a love of reading! I'm so glad your kids have picked it up too! I remember the only books I would read when I was young were the Goosebumps books by R.L.Stine. lol How those days are long gone, I now LOVE reading!!

Can you ever have too many books?
Nah! Lovely treasures, and great your kids like reading too.

Oh I love books too and have shelves and shelves of them. I still have all my books from when I was a child that I have passed onto my children. They get a laugh out of the styles and writing, but they love the stories. Np childhood would be complete without The Famous Five!!

And to pass that love of reading onto your kids is just fabulous. With the internet, I thought my kids would not devour books like I did, but I am glad to see that they do. I think as life gets busier and kids get older we don't have the same time we used to have to just sit and read a book...hence why it has taken me several weeks to work my way through Eat Pray Love!!

I love books too Clare and don't really mind what I read, but these days it doesn't seem to be often enough. I guess one day I will be retired and THEN I'll read everyday!!

I have that same poetry book! I love it and have had it as long as I can remember. It was a gift from my Mum and Dad. I used to learn poetry off by heart from it. The first was 'Way down south where banana's grow, a grasshopper stepped on an elephants toe. The elephant said with tears in his eyes, go and pick on someone your own size!' My Dad used to read the poetry to me when I went to bed at night.

Thank you for your wonderful Tuesday Treasures, books surely are a treasure, especially the first!

The love of reading is something I share with you and luckily my children love to read too. I do feel you are a kindred spirit and will certainly be back to visit you all the time.

I love children's books (That's why I work with children - it gives me an excuse to read kids books and not blow my cover )

Hi Clare, I agree that one of the best things you can do for your children is to get them interested in reading!
When I was a young girl in a country town in QLD, I had to go in and get something for my Mum. I saw a building across the road from the bus stop and went to have a look, the lady asked me if I would like to come in, and then she told me something SO exciting!- I could have some books to take home and read!!! That was my introduction to reading and Enid Blyton, and I have never stopped reading!!! My DM and DF were not readers. I owe so much to that lady of so many years ago, she could not know what gift she gave me!!!
By the way, my DH is a reader but mainly sticks to his favs- Henry Lawson, Banjo Paterson and Steele Rudd!!!! Hugs, Sandy, :-)

Books are just so special. I love reading and always look things up in dictionaries and encyclopaedias. It's great that your children have a love for books. My son does as well, he loves reading some classics but like you i can't get him into Aust poetry. One of my favourite books is "Henry Lawson for Young Australians" which I was given as a young child.

I think you are recapitulating your past and the poetry book is the best example. Really those time are gone and they are like treasure to us. All this thing are a way of recapitulating those memories.
