my creative space

It's all about doilies here today .
I found a few pretty ones the other day
and just left them in a bag in The Craftroom.

With all the rain on the weekend my floor was flooded .
Some of the doilies got wet but not ruined .
I thought what a shame it was that I rescued the doilies
from the opshop and then allowed
them to be neglected again .
Some of them are so beautiful and so much work
has gone into them I think they deserve a little better .
(Yes we are still talking about little bits of fabric here .)

So I will be in my creative space appreciating
my doilies and making new treasures from them .

Any suggestions ?

  1. I'm not sure what you should do with them... I have the same problem here. (except mine are hand appliqued napkins. If you come up with any great ideas, let me know!

Ok, so I did have a couple of ideas... a Table runnner, and clutch purses. Any good to you?

  4. Hmm.... Perhaps you can use some of them as they are, just doilies! Or if they have marks and you don't mind cutting them up I have a friend who made a raggy quilt but instead of two squares sandwiched together with batting she sewed the strips onto the backing and batting in a quilt-as-you-go style with strips from her stash adding doilies and ricrac and ribbons/lace as she went. Hope that makes sense.
Maybe round ones can be filled with potpourri and tied with a ribbon, as scented sachets. What ever you make have fun!!!

  5. You could just appliqued them on to a big quilt....The sashing of the blocks could be complementary colors to bring out the lovely flowers in the doilies. You are right though they are really gorgeous.

  6. Some of the larger ones would make gorgeous cushion covers or combine some smaller ones and applique them to a cushion front.
The cross stitch oval(?) one with the dark blue borders would be a nice centrepiece sewn on a sewing machine cover.

  7. Don't beat yourself up about getting them wet - you didn't intentionally flood your house. Hope you didn't get any damage from it. They are very beautiful!

  9. Decorate skirts or jackets with them or cheescloth dresses. Make pockets with them. Share with friends. Dolls, bunnies, bags, quilts squares with doilies set to the side or just collect them and admire from time to time. Cherrie

  17. I have to admit to hoarding vintage doilies; holding, feeling, looking at and enjoying them. Then very occasionally I make something out of them. Right now I'm using them on cushions. Look forward to seeing what inspirational idea you come up with Clare.

  21. They are pretty. I would cut them up and make a patch work cushion, combine them with your favourite fabric. That way you get to love them every day.
